In 1859, a fire destroyed parts of the reimagined castle, resulting in the royal family’s departure. It was privately proposed that the location be restored and used as a museum, which it remains to this day. Now known as the Museum of National History, the castle stands as a testament to Denmark’s rich past due to the exhibits within. Here, visitors are introduced to the characters and events that shaped the nation since the Middle Ages, primarily thanks to museum founder and financier J. C. Jacobsen and the Carlsberg Foundation.
