During this time of year, Italian bakery windows display dozens of these golden, fruit-studded yeast loaves. The origins of the bread are thought to date back to the Roman Empire, and it has been linked with Christmas since the mid-eighteenth century. Bakers in Milan began producing large batches of the sweet bread, and eventually it became the most favored holiday sweet in the country. Although traditionally made as a large loaf, our petite portions are perfect for giving as gifts.
