Clans have been an integral part of Scottish life and legends since the early days of the twelfth century, when these kinships lent a sense of identity and loyalty to the people of the Highlands. Taking its name from the area granted to an early ancestor, Clan Sutherland, family seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland, still holds sway in this part of the country, with the magnificent Dunrobin Castle, near the village of Golspie, serving as both the historic and present home of these long-respected nobles.
