When it was first constructed in the late 1500s, the High Drawing Room was more medieval great hall than the formal but cozy space it became after a mid-eighteenth-century remodel by the 5th Earl. Bowing to the classical influences of that time period, the room incorporated such elements as Greek columns framing the fireplace and overdoors painted to illustrate the liberal arts—drama, music, and architecture.
