The residence was commissioned by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt’s grandson, William, who presented it to his wife, Alva, as a thirty-ninth birthday present. Her regal bedroom features soft lilac silk lampas wall covering, and an eighteenth-century Pellegrini painting hangs above the elaborately dressed bed.
