
An eight-minute walk away sits Marble House, designed by noted architect Richard Morris Hunt. The residence was commissioned by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt’s grandson, William, who presented it to his wife, Alva, as a thirty-ninth birthday present. Her regal bedroom features soft lilac silk lampas wall covering, and an eighteenth-century Pellegrini painting hangs above the elaborately dressed bed.
