As a child, Joan purportedly heard visions and voices of angels, but her story was regarded with doubt. Not to be deterred, she earned an audience with Charles VII at Chinon. The young prince called on the expertise of doctors and theologians to examine the girl. The churchmen decided, in light of the grueling war, that Charles should leverage Joan. In more modern times, alternative theories question the validity of her claims, but, nonetheless, her tenacity and fearlessness remain indisputable.
