Louise put her own touch on the quarters, having additional, more modern windows cut into the coquina-stone walls. Families with children often stayed at the boarding house, and the laughter of youngsters blended with that of military officers, sea captains, and a naturalist or two who had come to paint the flora and fauna indigenous to Florida’s eastern shores.
