Louise de Lorrain-Vaudémont
Though Catherine de’ Medici’s influence was the last in the “era of builders” at Château de Chenonceau, other women still had an impact on the castle in the centuries that followed. Queen Louise de Lorraine-Vaudémont, wife of Henry III, was the next lady here. Known as the white queen, she dressed in royal mourning clothes (which were traditionally alabaster) for many years after the passing of her beloved husband. The château became her refuge after she was widowed, and she determined to dwell in a room close to the chapel.
