Throughout their almost two hundred–year history, Gien has sustained original designs while often introducing contemporary concepts. At first, the defining collections featured romantic landscapes, usually in a single color. From the mid-1800s to the turn of the century, Gien had mastered manufacturing techniques while the business naturally ebbed and flowed over the years. Following the First World War, Gien sought ways to modernize their production processes to produce exceptional merchandise; however, in 1984, the company faced closure.
