Driving along from Hastings through Winchester, the medieval town of Rye must not be missed. The snug cobblestone streets are chockablock with historical bed-and-breakfasts operated by affable innkeepers sharing vast knowledge of the area and secret stores of buttery scones and clotted cream. Left: The Apothecary Coffee Shop supplies an enchanting respite.  Right: A winding walk down cobbled lanes leads past Tudor and Regency period cottages, art galleries, and shop windows filled with antiques and curiosities.
