An American classical marble-top sideboard with bronze details has pride of place in Wakefield’s welcoming entry hall. Crafted in New York circa 1820, the piece was procured from The Brittany House Antiques at Oak Hill; one of a pair of mid-nineteenth-century gilt mirrors the Rushings acquired from a home in Louisiana rests on top.
A rare circa 1780 French Sèvres porcelain palace urn with bronze handles sits in the center and is original to Wakefield. The sideboard is flanked by mahogany Corinthian columns with gilt details, topped with mid-nineteenth-century Old Paris vases that are filled with peacock feathers—a nod to the proud birds who once roamed about the property. A glimpse of the original newel post, made from Honduran mahogany, is visible in the foreground.
