Giovan Battista, son of Niccolò Bussati, purchased the historical Palazzo Morgalanti property in 1795, operating a store that sold a variety of wares, from foodstuffs to yarn. When Napoleon’s army occupied the area, they co-opted all five floors of the building for their own purposes, using the basement for spinning and weaving material used to make blankets, uniforms, and other military supplies. The family did not regain full possession of their home until the Napoleonic Era ended. In 1842, Mario Busatti installed eight wooden looms and a warping machine in the abandoned workshop, which had been idle for more than twenty years, and hired a team of weavers to start up the new family business.
