A Royal Respite: The Isle of Anglesey

Royal
Henry Cyril Paget, the 5th Marquess, was a gentleman with theatrical flair who squandered much of his fortune and died deeply in debt. Upon his passing, and without having produced a male heir, his first cousin, Charles Henry Alexander Paget, became the 6th Marquess and set out to restore the ancestral home.

During this time, the artist Rex Whistler, a close family friend, visited Plas Newydd for prolonged periods. A romance never fully bloomed between him and Lady Caroline (the daughter of Lord and Lady Jersey), but they left behind numerous letters. Filled with thoughtful and humorous exchanges, their many epistles are on display here.
