With roots reaching back to the twelfth century, this medieval village was initially watched over by the Château de Rochefort-en-Terre, which was damaged through the ages by fighting and by fire. Left in ruins, the castle was rescued and restored by American artist Alfred Klots in the early 1900s. He and his son both utilized the château grounds for their painting endeavors, and the town quickly became a haven for artists who found infinite inspiration amid the Eden-like surroundings.
