Rising from Edinburgh’s city center, the impressive five-star Balmoral Hotel (left) is a striking mix of Victorian and Scottish baronial architectural styles. It opened in 1902 as the North British Hotel (or simply the “N.B.”)—a name that remained until the 1980s. Among its many amenities is a sumptuous afternoon tea, served in the Palm Court (right). The timepiece in the Balmoral’s iconic clock tower is set three minutes ahead to give rail passengers extra time to reach their trains.
