Some symbolism has changed since the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries—the period from which Kay Collier most typically collects antique seals. And sometimes it has been forgotten: A couple sending wedding invitations today might choose to use a color based on the palette they have chosen for the special occasion rather than selecting the classic white that was used for nuptuial correspondence long ago. But discovering and utilizing this lost symbolism can be a beautiful thing. “It’s about honoring people who came before,” the artist says, “appreciating that we are part of a bigger cycle and finding beauty in the smallest things.”
