Lewis and his brother, Warren, grew up in Belfast, where their family held both reading and education in high regard. After serving in World War I, Clive (or Jack, as he was known by his friends) began his studies at Oxford University’s University College, where he earned a remarkable triple first in subjects such as English language and literature, classical history, and philosophy. He then became a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, shown above left, a position he held for nearly thirty years before accepting a professorship at the University of Cambridge in 1954.
