After serving in World War I, Clive (or Jack, as he was known by his friends) began his studies at Oxford University’s University College, where he earned a remarkable triple first in subjects such as English language and literature, classical history, and philosophy. He then became a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, shown above left, a position he held for nearly thirty years before accepting a professorship at the University of Cambridge in 1954.
