Ingredients
  1. 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, divided
  2. ¼ cup plus 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, divided
  3. ½ cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  4. 1 cup granulated sugar
  5. 2 large eggs
  6. 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  7. ½ cup fresh orange juice, freshly squeezed or purchased in the dairy section
  8. 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  9. Garnish: fresh orange zest and orange curls
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with heavy-duty foil, letting foil hang over sides. Lightly spray pan with cooking spray.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup flour and ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar, whisking to blend. Using a pastry blender, cut butter into fl our mixture until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Work mixture with hands until a soft dough forms and mixture is uniformly moist. Press into prepared pan, creating an even layer. (Wearing latex gloves will prevent dough from sticking to hands.)
  4. Bake until crust is lightly browned, about 20 minutes. Let cool completely.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine granulated sugar, eggs, orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, and remaining 1 tablespoon flour, whisking until blended. Pour over cooled crust.
  6. Bake until filling is light brown and does not jiggle, about 30 minutes. Let cool completely in pan. Cover, and refrigerate until very cold, about 4 hours.
  7. Using excess foil as handles, lift from pan onto a cutting surface. Dust surface with remaining 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar. Using a long, sharp knife, trim edges, and cut into bars.
  8. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Garnish with additional orange zest and orange curls, if desired.

  1. I absolutely love blue and white china ! To me , it is indeed the nicest and most elegant colour combination for any tablescape.

My daily china is Blue Willow by Johnson Bros. and I also have a tea pattern called Empire from Ralph Lauren (Wedgwood) – both of which creates so many compliments from friends and guests over for tea.

I especially love the recipe for Orange Bars as the colours of Blue and Orange are direct opposites – bringing attention to each other as they sit on the table waiting for guests to tuck in.
