Though the association was established in 1961 by First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy, it wasn’t until two decades later that the tradition of releasing an annual commemorative ornament began with a simple, two-dimensional angel in 1981. Later designs became more complex, such as the 2017 iteration. Bearing a golden eagle much like that on the Presidential seal, this token was made as a memento of thirty-second President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s historic inauguration in 1933, when he spoke the famous words: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
