Historic Holiday Décor: White House Christmas Ornaments

The 2017 iteration of the annual White House Christmas ornament features the monogram of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Though the association was established in 1961 by First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy, it wasn’t until two decades later that the tradition of releasing an annual commemorative ornament began with a simple, two-dimensional angel in 1981. Later designs became more complex, such as the 2017 iteration. Bearing a golden eagle much like that on the Presidential seal, this token was made as a memento of thirty-second President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s historic inauguration in 1933, when he spoke the famous words: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
