Nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside, a former farmworker’s cottage finds new life. In these peaceful environs, ordinary cares fade and artful endeavors refresh the spirit.
A journey to the English market town of Banbury sets one in the frame of mind for revival, as vistas shift from bustling cityscapes to quaint villages and gently rolling hills of green. As the destination comes into view, clouds drift across a watery gray sky, and a breeze stirs sprigs of cow parsley in meadows dotted with sheep. At the center of the bucolic scene stands a two-story family home. The front door—painted the most charming shade of pink—swings open, ushering one into a day of bliss.
In the living room of Ashbrook, pastels lend a soothing backdrop to English Country furnishings. Josephine favors Annie Sloan Chalk Paints for creating an airy palette.A decade ago, Josephine Maydon recognized untapped potential in the 16-acre property, which included a neglected farmworker’s dwelling. The interior designer took a chance, dropping a note in the mailbox of the homeowners, who agreed to sell. Josephine and her family lived in the original structure for two years, intending to refurbish it. But it soon became clear that rebuilding would be more economical and energy-efficient than renovating.
The Maydons built a three-bedroom cottage and settled there while the larger dwelling was dismantled and rebuilt using reclaimed materials. Although the abode is only ten years old, its architectural blending of Georgian, Regency, and Victorian styles gives the brick charmer a timeless appearance. “We were determined to create a home that was new, with all the environmental credentials, but looked like it had always been there,” Josephine explains. Further developments include a swimming pool, pond, vegetable and cut-flower gardens, herbaceous borders, and a greenhouse.
Although they have since moved out of Ashbrook, passing it on to new caretakers, Josephine and her family will always treasure the memories of the splendid days they spent in their idyllic abode.Text Melissa Lester
