With a sophisticated whimsy that appeals to weekend gardeners, year-round residents, and visitors alike, East Hampton Gardens exudes an air of relaxed refinement, where a meticulously curated collection of plants, pottery, garden statuary, and glittering gift items comingle in a jewellike swirl.

In balmy summer days in the heart of the Hamptons, the pleasant hum of bees rises faintly from fragrant blooms, pea gravel crunches underfoot, and a serenely bubbling fountain surrounded by silvery foliage and a profusion of petals welcomes all who step into East Hampton Gardens, the botanical haven for home and garden aficionados owned by Michael Giannelli. Here, one may encounter a French faux bois aviary or a graceful swan planter alongside an English armillary sphere or a gleaming copper-roofed songbird house that seems to have been lifted from a fairy tale holding equal sway alongside fine linens, sparkling crystal, and thoughtfully selected hostess gifts. “I love to focus on finding little vintage treasures and unique items, so we have beautiful new pieces every season,” Michael says. “We’re always finding the unexpected.”

Because summer entertaining in the Hamptons most often occurs out of doors, Michael also tries to mix in an assortment of relaxed elements with the collection of more refined pieces. Describing the shop’s style as “formally informal,” Michael adds that “it exudes a lovely East Coast sensibility that reflects my whimsical personality.”

A longtime and avid gardener, Michael had been a customer of the shop since moving to the Hamptons. The former fashion executive turned over a new leaf in 2017 when he bought the garden center from the previous owners. With the help of his partner, interior designer Gregory Shano, the store’s interior and grounds were renovated. The business also expanded to include a broader range of services and an exquisite assortment of wares, ensuring that for the plant enthusiast or the consummate entertainer, each visit unveils a fresh array of floral finery and unexpected delights.

Those searching for elegant hostess gifts will find surfaces laden with the loveliest of table linens, books, whimsical mementos, exquisite tins of chocolate, and fragrant candles, including Bloom, a signature scent that is a delight for the senses.
